Those of you who have read my “Happy Birthday Cheeku” post (here)
Since my story went viral on social media, I have received many queries (and continue to do so) in regards to tips and tricks for enhancing a child’s speech. I have put together a folder on therapy material we received from our speech therapist along with my own insights based on my personal experience. At the end of this post you will find a link to the folder that you can have access to should you need it. But here are some things I would like to make clear. Consider it a public service message. You are free to agree or disagree to it, whatever rocks your boat.
Things that DON’T work:
1.Ghararay (gargles)
2.Saunf ka paani (fennel seed water)
3.Teaching Arabic alphabets for their magical power of unraveling speech
4.Chirion ka jhoota paani (water that’s been drunk by birds)
5. Khud hi theek ho jayay ga (Ignoring)
6. Feeling guilty that you have not done enough
7.Comparing your child to the parosi’s daughter who could sing the national anthem at your child’s age.

Things that DO work ONLY if done together.
1. Assessment by a professional
2. Speech therapy
3. Reduced screen time
4. Encouraging child to speak by NOT making everything readily available to them
5. Speech enhancing tactics like “social commenting”, “modelling good speaking”, “parallel talking” etc (you will find these in the folder)
6. Sincere Dua
7. Realizing your child is an individual and will have his/her own way/time of doing things
